Product-led growth, or PLG, is a growth approach in which the product experience plays a direct role in user acquisition, activation, and retention. The product must let users discover value and keep moving forward with it, supported by marketing and sales when appropriate.
How is product-led growth applied?
Define which action shows that the user got value and which obstacles stand in the way. Onboarding, the experience, and invitations to other users can all be part of the journey; they are measured with usage and business metrics.
How is it applied in marketing?
A tool lets users create and share a first report before offering additional features. The team measures how many users complete that task and come back, instead of looking at sign-ups alone.
| Concept | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Sign-up | The person creates an account. |
| Activation | The person takes an action that reflects value received. |
Frequently asked questions about product-led growth
Does PLG eliminate the sales team?
No. It can coexist with sales, especially when there are complex contracts, implementation, or enterprise needs.
Does every product need a free plan?
No. Access design depends on the business. A trial is a tactic, not a complete definition of PLG.
What is activation?
It is an observable action that represents initial value for the user. It must be defined for each product.
Which metrics should be tracked?
Activation, retention, feature adoption, and conversion to paid, tied to the business objective.
How do you test an improvement?
Form a hypothesis, compare appropriate groups or periods, and verify that the improvement in usage connects with sustainable results.
Product-led growth: limits you should know
Offering a free trial does not automatically turn a business into PLG. The approach needs a product capable of delivering value and a sustainable model.
